October 2024 Investment Changes

October 2024 UPDATES

We sold commodities-based fund and exchanged into a high yield money market fund. WHY? Commodities are generally used as an inflation hedge in portfolios, especially in times where fixed income alternatives offers limited yield and stability as had been the case for the past decade or so. However, with interest rates forecasted to decline over the next several years and yields that have risen into the 4% and higher range for most high-quality fixed income options it is a more attractive environment for traditional fixed income.

We exchanged lower yielding money market funds for higher yielding money market funds. WHY? Simply put, we now have access to a wider array of high yielding money market funds. Naturally, we wanted to take advantage of that in order to maximize your money market holdings.

Market Commentary and Upcoming Election

The capital markets have grown quite significantly this year. Here is a recap from the most recent quarter and forecast for what’s ahead.

What can I do to protect my investments if volatility spikes around the election?

Keep at least 3-6 months of emergency reserves, such as savings or money markets that are easily accessible.

Make sure your portfolio is diversified with high quality holdings that can recover over time if there is short term volatility. Our advisory portfolios meet this criteria.

Be sure you have sufficient fixed income (bond funds and money market funds) holdings to match your risk tolerance and shorter-term income needs.

Our Process

We follow a disciplined and diversified asset allocation process to build our portfolios. We believe in long-term investing, not short-term speculation. We lean on our Commonwealth Research team of 25+ professionals for ongoing asset allocation and fund screening. (Remember, Commonwealth offers no proprietary products, which enables us to make objective decisions.) Then, we utilize a secondary screening through Morningstar (a third-party investment research company) for another layer of due diligence.
